Jaw pain is exhausting. It affects how you sleep, what you eat, and how you feel by the middle of the afternoon. And because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects so many nerves and muscles, its symptoms can show up in surprising places.
The good news: most TMJ cases respond well to conservative, non-surgical treatment once we understand what is causing it.
What it is
The TMJ is the hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of your ears. TMJ disorder (sometimes called TMD) is any dysfunction of that joint or the muscles around it. Common triggers include nighttime grinding, an uneven bite, stress, an injury, or arthritis.
Symptoms can include jaw clicking or popping, jaw soreness, headaches near the temples, earaches without infection, difficulty opening wide, and worn or sensitive teeth.
Who it helps
Anyone waking up with a sore jaw or headache, patients who hear clicking or popping when they chew, people whose jaw feels stuck at times, and patients whose front teeth are chipping or wearing down without a clear cause. If you have been told you grind or clench your teeth, TMJ care is often part of the answer.

Questions
Frequently asked
How do I know if I have TMJ disorder?
Common signs include morning jaw soreness, headaches near the temples, clicking or popping when you chew, and unexplained ear pain. A brief exam can usually tell us right away.
What is the most common treatment?
For most patients, a custom night guard combined with bite adjustments and simple daytime awareness is enough to bring significant relief.
How long until I feel better?
Many patients feel a noticeable difference within one to two weeks of consistently wearing their night guard. Full symptom improvement often continues over the following months.
Do I need surgery?
Almost never. The vast majority of TMJ cases are managed successfully with conservative dental care. Surgical options are reserved for rare, specific situations.
Is TMJ related to stress?
Often, yes. Stress increases clenching and grinding, which strains the joint and muscles. That is why treatment also touches on habits, sleep, and daytime posture.
